When I finished reading the reprint of the fear-mongering pamphlet, I put the newspaper down and released that, mid-way through reading the main article and this piece, I had put my fork down as well.

Half of my breakfast remained completely untouched.

This was far worse than I’d thought and seemed to be ramping up exponentially.

I must have been sitting like that for a few minutes before I heard a text coming in.

It was from Lex.

I’m ready to talk. Can I call?

I picked up my phone and immediately texted her back. Of course. Any time. But can we do this in person?

It’s best if we don’t.

I shook my head. Was she really going to dump me via a phone call? Well, at least it wasn’t a text message. I miss you, Lex. And I’m sorry. I’d like to apologize in person. I need to see you. Please.

There was a long pause with no response. It stretched on for more than a minute. I mentally kicked myself. I was being too pushy, too demanding. It’s not the first time I’d done that.

The phone rang. It was Lex. Dammit, she was going to break up with me via the phone.

I thumbed the call answer icon and wordlessly lifted the phone to my ear.

“Okay. I’ll explain in person,” Lex said. “Can you meet me at 10:00 AM at the Westway Diner on 9th Avenue?”
